The Onion Website Calls Quvenzhane Wallis, Nine-Year-Old Best Actress Nominee, A C*nt On Twitter
There’s satire, and then there’s sashaying way over the line, and tonight during the 2013 Oscars, The Onion website took things beyond that line when they called Quvenzhane Wallis, the nine-year-old Best Actress nominee for “Beasts of the Southern Wild“ a “cunt” on Twitter.
The story was first broken by Salon.com, and given that the tweet has already been deleted, one can only imagine that someone at The Onion had the good sense to realize that they just ruined the experience of a lifetime for a young girl.
We’ve all become accustomed to the biting and razor edged humour that often comes out of The Onion, but the consensus on this joke is that not only was it not funny in the slightest, but someone should be losing their job over this one.
Come on Onion, you used to be cool, what happened to you?
The Onion has issued a public apology to Wallis and assures us that they are taking measures to insure that it will not happen again. The CEO of The Onion stated in his apology that measures are being put in place to handle this situation and the people who were responsible for the action are being punished appropriately.
Now, I ask you, what more should The Onion do? Turn back time? Have you ever said or done something that you regret afterwards? After apologizing, did you hope for forgiveness? If you can’t forgive The Onion after their contrition, then you may want to learn a little lesson from them. It is easy to condemn but it takes real balls to apologize and it takes real grace to forgive.
I, personally, applaud The Onion for standing up and taking responsibility for their actions. The Tweet was reprehensible and in poor taste but the act of contrition on the part of The Onion shows that they really are a classy bunch.
I think the apology is a very good thing – absolutely.
That is the thing about a joke: there are NO LINES! It is satire! Your fake ingignance and false outrage makes YOU a cunt. Get over yourself and lighten up, frances.
I’ve spent the last hour trying to find the word “ingignance” anywhere on the web and have turned up nothing – is this some sort of new addition to Websters dictionary that hasn’t been officially printed yet, or are you just making up stuff as you go along.
The Onion is full of dicks. Frankly it needs to be fumigated, to many mysoginistic bigots crawling around.
